Before You Book

Frequently Asked Questions

We receive a large number of e-mails every day, so we ask that you first read through the information already on the site for pricing, accommodations and general questions. Beyond that, please feel free to write or call us with anything else you want to know about a Dominican adult vacation.

About Blackbeard's

  • What exactly is Blackbeard's Adult Resort?

Blackbeard's Adult Resort is a hotel catering to adults only — no one under 18 is allowed. Our discreet and safe resort sits in the beautiful, upscale, gated beachside town of Costambar, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

  • What is the atmosphere like at Blackbeard's?

Very casual, carefree, laid back, no pressure and relaxed. We run numerous daily and nightly events around the pool and in our two bars, and our dedicated staff will do whatever it takes to make your stay everything you ever dreamed of — and much, much more.

  • Will I fit in if I am over 65, and is it easy to get into the swing of things?

Everyone fits in. We have many guests over 65, and our repeat business runs at 90%, so there are always guests here who have been several times before. For first timers, our management staff will walk you through our “house rules” and make you a regular pirate in no time.

  • Where are you located?

Blackbeard's is on Costambar Beach, about 35 minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) and about 1½ hours from Santiago International Airport (STI). We highly recommend flying into POP or STI — other airports are a considerable distance away, and those are the only two we offer airport pickup from. We are a 10 minute taxi ride from the centre of Puerto Plata, 15 minutes from Playa Dorada Plaza and Golf Club, and 45 minutes from Sosúa.

Where we are and getting here
  • How far are you from the beach?

We are across the street from the beautiful Caribbean. The main part of the beach is about a two minute walk from the resort, where you will find chairs, umbrellas, beach bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.

  • How do I make a reservation?

We take all reservations through the website, and because of the volume we handle them first come, first served. Start by sending us an availability request; we will reply letting you know whether the dates and room type you asked for are free, along with simple instructions for confirming. Your reservation is confirmed by e-mail within 24 hours.

We recommend paying cash on arrival: there is a 20% surcharge on all check-in credit card charges.

  • Is it safe?

Yes. You can feel comfortable walking or riding around the country and the cities. As with any other country, common sense applies.

  • Do you have phone and internet service?

There is a free PC station in our lobby, and WiFi reaches every common area as well as the guest rooms.

  • Does Blackbeard's offer “all inclusive” packages?

No. Since opening our doors we have been committed to providing the best service at the best price, and to keep our rates as low as possible we do not offer special travel packages, rates or discounts.

  • What about tipping?

A government-mandated gratuity of 10% is included in all bar and restaurant charges. As at any fine establishment where the service is first-rate, additional tipping at the end of your stay is customary — but never enforced.

  • How is the food?

Blackbeard's has a full service restaurant open from 8am until 11pm, with a wide variety of local and international fare. Menu prices are in pesos.

  • Is there a dress code?

Yes — we strongly adhere to “beach casual”. Shorts, tank tops and flip flops are the order of the day.

  • Is the water safe to drink?

Our hotel is equipped with a 4-stage filter system. We also provide bottled water.

Staying in the Dominican Republic

  • Are passports and/or visas required?

US citizens travelling abroad are required to carry a passport. Travellers from outside the US should check the requirements for their country with their airline or travel agent.

  • Do I need a tourist card or an E-Ticket?

The Dominican Republic E-Ticket is a mandatory, 100% free digital form that combines three travel requirements into one. It replaces the usual visa, which is no longer required to visit the country.

Who needs it: every passenger, foreign tourists and Dominican nationals alike, must fill out an E-Ticket for both arrival and departure. It is best completed up to 72 hours before your flight, though it can be done right up until check-in.

How it works: fill out the form on the official government portal for both entry and exit, and the system generates two QR codes. Print them or save screenshots on your phone — your airline checks the QR code before you board, and customs scans it when you arrive. That’s it. Simple.

    Fill out the E-Ticket (free)
  • What is the weather like in the Dominican Republic?

Absolutely gorgeous. This part of the Caribbean is very lucky to enjoy consistently good weather all year round: sunny days, evenings full of warm tropical breezes, and very little temperature change between winter and summer. Our atmosphere is casual and tropical attire is encouraged — don't forget the sunscreen.

  • Is it a big problem if I do not speak Spanish?

If your Spanish is somewhat rusty, don't worry. Everyone always seems to find a way to communicate with very little difficulty.

Getting around & travel

  • Are there taxis at the airport? Is airport pickup available?

We can arrange for our local taxi service to pick you up — just e-mail us your flight schedule and we will make the arrangements and bill it to your room. We provide pickup from both Puerto Plata and Santiago. From Puerto Plata (POP) the fare is RD$2,750, roughly US$51 one way. Santiago (STI) is about 1½ hours away and costs RD$6,050, roughly US$112 one way per person.

We do not pick up from Santo Domingo. Taxis from there run about US$230, or you can travel by Caribe Tours bus (departures 6am to 6pm) for around US$10, plus the taxi fares from the airport to the bus station and from the bus station to Blackbeard's.

  • Will I need to rent a car?

You really don't. Costambar is conveniently located and local taxi service is always available. If you do decide to rent, choose a reputable company and insist on full insurance.

  • Can I rent a golf cart?

Our hotel golf cart is complimentary for 1–3 hours during the day for registered guests.

  • How do I get around once I check in?

Taxis are available at the hotel 24 hours a day and can also be picked up in town. For the more adventurous, try the local form of Dominican taxi: a “motoconcho”. Most locals use these motorcycle taxis, which will take one or two people anywhere for a nominal fee. An experience not to be missed.

  • Do you have tours?

Yes. We have a wide variety of tours and recommend taking advantage of your time here to see how beautiful this country is. We also run numerous taxi tours that save you money and give you round-trip transport without any haggling.

Money

  • Does Blackbeard's accept major credit cards?

Yes — Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club. There is a 20% surcharge on credit card charges, so bring cash and save yourself some money.

  • Does Blackbeard's offer currency exchange?

Absolutely. As a service to our guests we exchange US dollars, Canadian dollars, British pounds and euros into pesos.

  • What is the best currency to bring?

Here in the Dominican Republic the US dollar is the easiest to exchange and gets the most favourable rate.

  • Can I get money out of Dominican banks?

Cash is readily available from ATMs throughout Puerto Plata, and there is now one right here in Costambar within walking distance of the hotel. Cash is dispensed in Dominican pesos only, and the maximum daily withdrawal is normally around US$450.
